Dick & Carey Model
Dick and Carey Model- The Dick and Carey model was created in 1970 and is learner centered and outcome focused. This model consists of 4 major key components and recognizes that all phases are interdependent. The 4 components include learning context, content/ subject area, and learner’s behaviors.
1
Learning Context
Learning Contexts – Acknowledges the learning environment. Takes the physical and virtual spaces and resources into account.
2
Content/ Subject Area
Acknowledges that Subject Matter Experts or content plays a crucial role in instructional design.
3
Learner’s Behaviors
Recognizes that participants must be active in the learning and the instructor must take into consideration prior knowledge and skills.
4
Instructional Strategies
The importance of selecting appropriate instructional strategies that align with learning context.
Implications of The Dick and Carey Model on Instructional Design

-
Identify Instructional goals- Define the goals and objectives of the instructional design program.
-
Conduct Instructional Analysis- This is the most challenging step. This step involves needing to understand the characteristics of the learners and their prior knowledge on the subject.
-
Identify Entry Behaviors- The instructional designer must understand the characteristics of the learners, their prior knowledge, and their specific needs.
-
Write performance objectives- Develop measurable performance objectives.
-
Develop Assessment Instructions- Create assessment methods and tools that align with performance objectives to measure progress and achievement.
-
Develop Instructional Strategy- Details how the content will be delivered.
-
Develop and Select Instructional Strategy – This step outlines how content will be delivered and what materials will be utilized.
-
Desing and Conduct- During this step, a formative evaluation should be completed during this step.
-
Revise Instruction- Based on feedback that is received this step requires instructional designers to revise the instruction.
-
Conduct Summative Evaluation- The instructional designer should assess if the objectives have been met.
Strengths VS. Limitations

The Dick and Carey model sets clear objectives and ensures materials are well organized and focused.
-
The objectives are aligned with the assessments, objectives, and materials.
-
This model gathers feedback and makes improvements to instructions before final implementation.
-
The Dick and Carey model is flexible and can accommodate a variety of instruction.

Limitations:
-
The Dick and Carey model can be complex
-
This model can be time consuming
-
Might not be ideal for all situations
-
There is an overemphasis on analysis
