Dick & Carey Model

Dick and Carey Model- The Dick and Carey model was created in 1970 and is learner centered and outcome focused. This model consists of 4 major key components and recognizes that all phases are interdependent. The 4 components include learning context, content/ subject area, and learner’s behaviors.

Learning Context

Learning Contexts – Acknowledges the learning environment. Takes the physical and virtual spaces and resources into account.

2

Content/ Subject Area

Acknowledges that Subject Matter Experts or content plays a crucial role in instructional design.

3

Learner’s Behaviors

Recognizes that participants must be active in the learning and the instructor must take into consideration prior knowledge and skills.

4

Instructional Strategies

The importance of selecting appropriate instructional strategies that align with learning context.

Implications of The Dick and Carey Model on Instructional Design

  1. Identify Instructional goals- Define the goals and objectives of the instructional design program.

  2. Conduct Instructional Analysis- This is the most challenging step. This step involves needing to understand the characteristics of the learners and their prior knowledge on the subject.

  3. Identify Entry Behaviors- The instructional designer must understand the characteristics of the learners, their prior knowledge, and their specific needs.

  4. Write performance objectives- Develop measurable performance objectives.

  5. Develop Assessment Instructions- Create assessment methods and tools that align with performance objectives to measure progress and achievement.

  6. Develop Instructional Strategy- Details how the content will be delivered.

  7. Develop and Select Instructional Strategy – This step outlines how content will be delivered and what materials will be utilized.

  8. Desing and Conduct- During this step, a formative evaluation should be completed during this step.

  9. Revise Instruction- Based on feedback that is received this step requires instructional designers to revise the instruction.

  10. Conduct Summative Evaluation- The instructional designer should assess if the objectives have been met.

Strengths VS. Limitations

Strengths:

  1. The Dick and Carey model sets clear objectives and ensures materials are well organized and focused.

  2. The objectives are aligned with the assessments, objectives, and materials.

  3. This model gathers feedback and makes improvements to instructions before final implementation.

  4. The Dick and Carey model is flexible and can accommodate a variety of instruction.

Limitations:

  1. The Dick and Carey model can be complex

  2. This model can be time consuming

  3. Might not be ideal for all situations

  4. There is an overemphasis on analysis
